The UNESCO 46th World Heritage Meeting, held from July 21 to July 31, 2024, at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, showcased India’s cultural and technological marvels to a global audience. The meeting was hosted by the ministry of culture and the archeological survey of India and was inaugurated by the honorable Prime Minister of India, the event welcomed over 1,500 foreign delegates from more than 150 countries. Among the highlights was the seamless integration of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), powered by CheqUPI, one of the official payment partners of the event. This marked a significant milestone in promoting UPI’s global adoption, aligning with the UPI One World program initiated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
CheqUPI’s Role as an Official Payment Partner
In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, CheqUPI played a crucial role in showcasing the power and convenience of UPI to foreign delegates. Each delegate received a welcome gift from the Government of India, loaded into their UPI wallet, allowing them to experience the ease of digital payments during their stay. The wallet, powered by CheqUPI, enabled transactions for food, souvenirs, and other services throughout the event. Delegates could also load funds through their credit and debit cards, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free payment experience.
Expanding UPI One World: A Step Towards Global Integration
CheqUPI’s participation in the UNESCO convention was more than just a demonstration of cutting-edge financial technology; it was a strategic move to promote UPI on a global scale. Under the UPI One World program, originally focused on G20 nations, the RBI and NPCI expanded its reach to all nationalities, relaxing transaction limits to further encourage adoption. This collaboration between the regulator (RBI), NPCI, and the industry player (CheqUPI) ensured that foreign delegates had a seamless financial experience, addressing potential challenges in a holistic manner.
Business Growth and Market Presence for CheqUPI
For CheqUPI, the event was an opportunity to showcase its capabilities to an international audience. With over 10,000 foreign nationals already on its platform, CheqUPI is the most popular app among foreigners for making UPI payments in India. The event significantly boosted its distribution, thanks to recent regulatory changes and the positive experiences shared by delegates on social media. CheqUPI’s long-term vision includes continued collaboration with the Indian government to promote UPI among foreign nationals, ensuring that digital payments become a universally accepted standard.
Introducing New Features for Enhanced User Experience
To cater to the diverse group of delegates, CheqUPI introduced several new features during the convention. An AI-powered assistant provided information about UPI, the event, and India’s rich cultural heritage, while also offering recommendations on food and places to visit. For added security, an SOS feature was integrated, allowing delegates to access emergency services, including law enforcement and medical assistance. CheqUPI also launched it B2B corporate expense management service in the program for direct benefit transfer of welcome gift to the foreign delegates.
Ensuring Security and Smooth User Experience
Security and data privacy were top priorities for CheqUPI, with measures such as end-to-end encryption, data localization, and advanced authentication methods like OTP, TOTP, and device binding. Additionally, CheqUPI made significant design changes to ensure the app was simple and intuitive for users of all ages and nationalities. Multilingual support and a dedicated relationship manager were also provided to assist delegates who were new to UPI.
The Road Ahead
The UNESCO event marked a significant milestone for CheqUPI, with delegates conducting transactions worth over ₹5 lakh in a short span of time. As UPI continues to expand beyond G20 nations, CheqUPI is poised to capitalize on opportunities in countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. With a commitment to innovation and user experience, CheqUPI is set to lead the way in making UPI a global standard for digital payments.
